Adobe Connect (Breeze)

Description

Adobe Connect (previously known as Breeze, after which our server is named) is primarily a web conferencing tool which allows you to 'meet' others online using nothing but a web browser. You can broadcast audio and video to multiple participants, record meetings and share files or even your computer screen. Other available tools include a collaborative whiteboard and multiple choice polls.

The Connect system also includes Adobe Presenter, a plugin for Microsoft PowerPoint which enables the recording of narration for your slides. Using a microphone you give your narrative while clicking through the slides and animations. The result is a fully synchronised slideshow which plays the audio alongside the
relevant slides. Recordings are published to the Breeze server, can be linked from anywhere and can be viewed with just a web browser.

Pedagogical Value and Theory

Adobe Connect meetings can be extremely useful for teaching purposes, especially in distance learning. A meeting 'room' can be set up in seconds, creating a web address which all participants visit - then they simply enter their name and they are able to view the meeting. A lecturer can easily share files such as a PowerPoint slideshow and provide a commentary, just like in a lecture theatre. Students can give feedback or ask questions via text chat (or optionally, they can also broadcast video and audio to communicate), vote on polls, or even share files and give their own presentations. Adobe Connect meeting rooms are also useful for normal meetings when it is impractical to get everyone together.

Adobe Presenter is a useful way of recording a 'lecture' for distance learning students or anyone who missed the main lecture, or just as extra content. Students can view the recording as and when they want to, and the navigation allows them to pause or jump between slides as they wish, so they can digest the content in their own time.

Examples of Use at Middlesex

  • Various members of the Institute for Work Based Learning use Connect meeting rooms for teaching purposes.
  • Collaborative Links use Connect for meetings with overseas staff in countries such as Hong Kong, China and Egypt.
  • Adobe Presenter use is widespread in the Business School - for example Kirit Patel records weekly lectures and publishes the links on My Learning.
