This pilot aims to introduce and explore the future use of lecture capture and streaming technology to enhance and enrich the student learning experience.

Background and Context
An identified need emerged when we found that the University was not able to provide a service to record (and then release via the web) the keynote presentations at last year’s Annual Learning and Teaching Conference – the theme of which was “Digital Literacy”, Using appropriate technology would have enabled the dissemination of such events to a wider audience.
Student demand for such a resource has been evident with the increased reporting of incidents of students recording lectures on phones and mobiles devices. Discussion of the above at the University ELTA (Enhancing Learning Teaching and Assessment) Group proposed a pro-active approach to more effectively meeting this demonstrated student need with the proposal for the small scale introduction of lecture capture and streaming technology.

Possible advantages/outcomes
The literature suggests a range of incentives and benefits for the use of such approaches which may enhance the student learning and teaching experience:

  • Real time streaming of lectures internationally and across campuses
  • Aids student progression and achievement by enabling them to revisit work delivered in a range of modes including lectures, demonstrations, performances etc - to gain a greater understanding of difficult concepts, materials and ideas, to revise work
  • Enhances understanding for International students who may revisit to enhance language understanding
  • Enrichment of distance learning programmes
  • Can improve accessibility for disabled students
  • May be used as the basis for the development of alternative and authentic modes of e-assessment including peer assessment
  • Provides a medium through which the quality of learning and teaching at Middlesex can be conveyed externally
